70-year-old man bags PhD degree from Howard University with honours, celebrates achievement
Joseph M. Grant, 70, has realized a lifelong dream by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Political Science from Howard University in Washington, DC.
Throughout his life, Joseph M. Grant has studied American government and Black politics. He once again demonstrates to the world that academic excellence knows no age limit. “I’ve always wanted to go to Howard; literally my entire life,” Grant explained.
Grant, who has worked in politics and government, wanted to learn more about how Black people and Black culture engaged with political processes, as reported in Because Of Them We Can. He began his PhD program at the age of 65.
Howard University celebrated his accomplishment by giving him a shoutout on its official Facebook page. According to Howard Newsroom, Ravi Perry, Chair of the Department of Political Science, admired Grant’s desire to return to the classroom and learn.
“Grant’s determination, his research acumen and the efficiency with which he successfully matriculated through our rigorous graduate studies is a shining light for all of us to never ever give up on one’s dreams,” Perry said. “Learning from the lifelong experiences of students like Dr. Grant enriches the teaching profession.”
Grant, who previously taught for four years at a South Carolina community college, revealed that he was motivated to make a difference in his community.
“What [my students] had in common was being intimidated by government and their lack of knowledge about how to navigate the system. So, I was able to connect with a lot of my students and help them resolve issues that involve government by helping them understand it. That was rewarding!” Grant said.
