14-year-old Nigerian kid beats 356 contestants to emerge winner of the first igbo spelling bee competition

Oluebeube Ogbonna, a 14-year-old Nigerian, defeated 356 other contestants to be named the winner of the first native Igbo spelling bee competition in Anambra state, South-East Nigeria.

Igbo is the language of an ethnic group that predominates in Nigeria’s eastern region. The Hausa language, Yoruba language, and others are among the other significant ethnic languages spoken in Nigeria.

Oluebeube Ogbonna, a student at Divine Rays British School in Anambra, Nigeria, won the igbo spelling bee tournament after outperforming 356 other public and private secondary school pupils from the Awka, Nnewi, and Onitsha educational zones.

At the occasion, which City Speller Bee in collaboration with Onitsha Business School arranged, students were evaluated on their understanding of spelling, Igbo syllabication, and punctuation.

The competition’s project manager, Mr. Chinedu Aniagboso, said that it was Nigeria’s first indigenous language spelling bee and that it was intended to draw young people.

“You can see how excited these students are competing in their own language; they not only understand English, they are also proficient in Igbo,” he said.
