Belgium’s luck runs out as Morocco triumphs in a historic victory
At the Al-Thumma stadium on Sunday, the Atlas Lions of Morocco defeated a disappointing Belgium 2-0 to earn their first World Cup victory since 1998.
Abdelhamid Sabiri’s free kick in the 73rd minute beat Thibaut Courtois in goal for Belgium, giving Morocco the lead after a scoreless first half. This was the first goal of the tournament to be converted.
In the 90th minute, Zakaria Aboukhlal put an end to the North Africans’ chances of a comeback, effectively ending their chances of winning the match.
Morocco needed to defeat a talented Belgium team in order to maintain their hopes of qualifying after their disappointing goalless draw with Croatia in their group’s opening match.
With four points, they are currently in first place in Group F, and they plan to beat Canada in their final group match to clinch qualification.
