Brilliant African girl wins UK Rhodes scholarship twice, set to earn Masters degree at University of Oxford free of charge

Isatu Bokum, a remarkable African woman from The Gambia, became the first Gambian to ever win the United Kingdom Rhodes Scholarship twice.

Isatu Bokum earned her journalism bachelor’s degree from the University of The Gambia. After that, she was awarded the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, which allowed her to enroll in the University of Cape Town in South Africa and pursue an honors degree there.

Isatu Bokum advanced in her studies and won the esteemed Rhodes Trust Scholarship from the United Kingdom, which will enable her to complete a Master’s degree in Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Oxford.

Successful applicants for the Rhodes Trust Scholarship at the University of Oxford get a living allowance of £17,310 a year in addition to a full waiver of tuition. Candidates have submitted their applications since the 2022 Award application period commenced in May 2022.

With her second scholarship, Isatu Bokum became the only Gambian to ever get two Rhodes Scholarship Awards. She expressed her delight about getting the chance to study at the esteemed University of Oxford in the United Kingdom on LinkedIn.

“And just like that, your girl is in the big leagues. It’s official, I’m an #oxonian! My heart is full of joy,” she wrote.
