Griezmann, a Frenchman, admits he has a warm spot for Uruguay
In order to help his country reach the World Cup’s knockout rounds, France’s Antoine Griezmann has been closely following Uruguay.
Griezmann, whose last-second equalizer was overturned in France’s 1-0 loss to Tunisia on Wednesday, has expressed sympathy with Uruguayan supporters who are still in danger of going home after their country’s loss to Portugal on Monday.
“I watched the whole games with tremendous tension,” he told ESPN. “I hope they qualify… Uruguay noma!”
The French forward added he is proud of his former team mate and Uruguay’s centre back Diego Godin who recovered in time for the World Cup from a knee injury.
“I saw him in Madrid working hard, he had a lot of pain in his knees and, in the end, he is here and that fills me with pride.”
After making friends with Uruguayan players Cristian Rodriguez and Jose Maria Gimenez at Atletico Madrid, Griezmann, 31, has previously expressed his love for the South American nation.
The 2018 World Cup champion claimed to often consume mate, enjoy “dulce de leche” as a snack, enjoy listening to Uruguayan music, and be a big Penarol fan.
On Friday, Uruguay’s final Group H matchup is against Ghana. “La Celeste” needs to win to have any chance of making it to the round of 16 in Qatar with just one point from two games and no goals scored.
