De Arrascaeta’s double is ineffective as Uruguay’s victory does not advance them.
Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice as Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0 on Friday, but the victory was insufficient to keep them in the World Cup as South Korea beat Portugal to claim the Group H runners-up spot.
Andre Ayew’s soft penalty was easily saved by Sergio Rochet in the 21st minute, giving Uruguay a chance to take the lead. Ghana, who famously missed a penalty kick in extra time in a quarterfinal match against Uruguay in South Africa 12 years ago, missed the opportunity to take the lead.
In the 26th minute, De Arrascaeta headed the ball over the line from close range following a shot from Luis Suarez, and six minutes later, Suarez again participated in the buildup as Uruguay scored their first goals of the tournament.
The victory moved Uruguay into third place on four points, level with South Korea, who made it through the tournament with more goals scored after scoring a late winner in a 2-1 victory.
