The statistics for Portugal vs. Korea Republic

In their lone previous encounter, Korea Republic defeated Portugal 1-0 at home in a group stage match of the 2002 Fifa World Cup. As a result, Portugal was eliminated from the competition while they won their group.

Portugal’s only loss in five previous encounters with Asian teams at the Fifa World Cup came against Korea Republic in 2002. In the other four encounters, Portugal won three and drew one.

Only five of Korea Republic’s 23 Fifa World Cup games versus European teams have ended in victories (D6 L12), and each of those five victories came against a different country.

Korea Republic has lost five of their last seven World Cup games (W1 D1), matching their previous 16-game losing streak. For just the third time in the competition, they hope to win their third group game, having done it in 2002 (against Portugal) and 2018.

Portugal has already advanced to the World Cup 2022 knockout rounds after defeating Ghana and Uruguay. They already accomplished this feat in 1966 and 2006, and are attempting to do so a third time.

More than any other country in World Cup history, Portugal has never lost a game after scoring the opening goal (P18 W15 D3).

In each of Portugal’s two World Cup group stage matches this year, they have scored a penalty. In a World Cup group stage match, no team has ever scored a penalty in all three of their contests.

Last time out, Jo Gyu-Seong scored twice for Korea Republic against Ghana, making up 33% of his overall goals for the national team (2/6). For the Asian team, no player has ever scored three goals in a single World Cup.

No central midfielder made more progressive carries (28) or more chances after a carry (3) through the first two matchdays of the 2022 World Cup than Portugal’s Bernardo Silva.

In addition to scoring twice in Portugal’s 2-0 victory over Uruguay, Bruno Fernandes has contributed to four of Portugal’s five goals at this year’s World Cup (2 goals, 2 assists). Only Fernandes has scored multiple goals and provided multiple assists in a team’s first two group stage games this century.
