Drama as suspect escapes the courtroom into the bushes after the judge ordered his detention in jail

A 21-year-old man who had been arraigned before the Odigbo Magistrate’s Court in Ondo State escaped after the magistrate ordered his remand.

On Monday, June 5, during the hearing, the accused, Segun Akala, who was charged with theft, fled through the window while still in handcuffs.

Magistrate D.O. Ogunfuyi remanded him at the Okitipupa Correctional Centre.

However, before being taken to the correctional facility, the defendant ran into a nearby bush and had to be apprehended by police operatives on the court grounds.

Usifo James, the police prosecutor, previously told the court that Akala committed the crime on May 27, 2023, at Aipon Road in Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Council Area.

He claimed the suspect stole a motor saw, a motor saw chain, and a pull-over cloth worth N300,000 from one Akintan Akintade.

The defendant entered a not guilty plea to the charges.

The prosecutor claimed that the offense violated Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

James requested an adjournment from the court so that he could study the case file and prepare his witnesses for trial.

Magistrate Ogunfuyi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in the same amount in his ruling.

He adjourned the case until June 23, 2023.
