After Ghana’s Andre Ayew missed a penalty after Sergio Rochet was given a warning for pulling down Mohammed Kudus, the South Americans made their breakthrough.

In the 26th minute, Luis Suarez’s low shot was spilled by the goalkeeper after Darwin Nunez’s cross was missed by two defenders and found him. De Arrascaeta, making his first start of the competition, then headed home from close range.

Six minutes later, Uruguay, who famously eliminated Ghana in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal, scored once more at the Al Janoub Stadium when Nunez flicked the ball to Suarez, who passed it on to de Arrascaeta for a volley under Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Portugal currently leads the group with seven points, followed by Uruguay.
