Messi wins Golden Ball for best player at World Cup

After leading Argentina to win in the World Cup final against France, Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball for the tournament’s greatest player on Sunday.

Messi scored twice in the championship match in Doha to bring his tournament total to seven goals. He also scored in the shootout as Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in overtime.

Despite finishing second behind Messi in that contest, Kylian Mbappe took home the Golden Boot for the tournament’s best scorer with eight goals, one more than the Argentine captain.

After contributing to Croatia’s third-place result, Luka Modric placed third in the voting for the best player.

Emiliano Martinez of Argentina won the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper at the World Cup, and his compatriot Enzo Fernandez, age 21, was named best young player.

Following their victories in 1978 and 1986, Argentina was able to win the World Cup for a third time with their victory over France.
