A-Ibom 2023: Court overturns APC guber primary and orders new elections

The All Progressive Congress, APC, party’s governoship primary election, held on May 26, 2022, has been cancelled by a court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and a new election has been ordered.

Meanwhile, Eseme Eyiboh, an APC chieftain in the state, has expressed dissatisfaction with the order that disqualified Udofia.

Eyiboh, the APC candidate for Eket Federal Constituency, assured their throngs of supporters and well-wishers that the judgment would be overturned at the Court of Appeal.

Senator Ita Enang, a former aide to President Mohammedu Buhari, claimed in court that the party primary election won by Obong Akan Udofia was marred by several irregularities because the winner was not a party member.

In his argument, Udofia claimed that the APC had granted him a waiver, allowing him to run in the party primary election on May 26, 2022.

Yesterday, the trial judge, Justice Agatha Okeke, ruled that the APC primary election was invalid and ordered the party in the state to hold another credible primary election within two weeks.

Justice Okeke also dismissed Udofia’s alleged waiver and ordered the party to hold another primary election in a fortnight to determine the APC’s authentic governorship flag bearer in the state.

The court also ruled that Udofia, who claimed to have won the APC’s canceled primary election in the state, should not run in the new party’s primary election.

It will be remembered that the purported APC governorship primary election in the state won by Udofia was hijacked by party bigwigs such as Senator Godswill Akpabio on the one hand and the camp of Senator John Akpanudoedehe, who later dumped the party for the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, leaving Ita Enang, Atuekong Don Etiebet, Capt. Sam Ewang, and others.
