World Cup

Lukaku will miss Belgium’s first two World Cup games.

Romelu Lukaku will not be fit in time for Belgium’s first two group games due to ongoing fitness issues.

The striker has been out since August after suffering a thigh injury in training.

Despite returning for 22 minutes against Sampdoria in October, the former Chelsea striker suffered a relapse of his injury.

He then returned to action in October, scoring in a 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen to secure Inter’s place in the Champions League’s last 16 before injuring his hamstring again a few days later.

As he races against the clock to be certified fit to contribute to Belgium’s World Cup campaign, the striker is lacking in match fitness.

Belgium begins their tournament on Wednesday against Canada at Al Rayyan Stadium, and they have also been drawn in Group H with Morocco and Croatia.

According to Belgian press reports via Calciomercato.com, Lukaku will miss the games against Canada and Morocco, but will return against Croatia.

Martinez, on the other hand, has options, with Leandro Trossard and Michy Batshuayi both capable of filling in for Lukaku.
