The Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Justice Inyang Ekwo, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately resume Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) until 90 days before the 2023 general elections.

In his decision, Justice Ekwo also directed INEC to ensure that eligible Nigerians are not denied the right to vote in the upcoming election.

He maintained that it was the electoral umpire’s constitutional responsibility to make adequate provisions for the exercise in accordance with Nigerian laws.

Anajat Salmat and three others had sued INEC, claiming that the electoral body could not stop voter registration in violation of the constitution’s provisions.

They asked the court to order the electoral umpire to resume the election in accordance with the country’s laws.

INEC suspended the CVR in July after a one-month extension after the Federal High Court dismissed a suit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) seeking an extension of the exercise beyond June 30, 2022.
