Nigerian music icon, Tiwa Savage bags PhD degree from UK university
Many years after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the university, Tiwatope Savage, the dean of Nigerian music, has now earned an honorary PhD from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom.
Tiwa Savage, better known by her stage name Tiwa Savage, was born in Nigeria but moved to the UK when she was 11 years old to attend secondary school. She joined the musical team at her high school in the UK, where she later discovered her vocation.
She started her path to become a musician five years after arriving in the UK. She studied at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, during this time, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
She has now accomplished a number of milestones both on the international stage and in the Nigerian music industry. Her album received nominations in 2014 for Best Album of the Year in Nigeria and Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies.
Her alma university, the University of Kent, awarded her an honorary Doctorate degree in celebration of her achievements. On July 15, 2022, the university tweeted, “We’re incredibly thrilled to have awarded the Queen of Afrobeats an honorary doctorate at Canterbury Cathedral this morning.”
