Nigeria: Mukhtar Shagari explains why he turned down an invitation to be Peter Obi’s running mate

Mukhtar Shagari, the former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, has stated that he does not believe Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, would succeed.

According to a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, he turned down an invitation to be Obi’s running mate because he did not believe he could win the presidential election.

Shagari stated this on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, stating that the Labour Party candidate had no chance in the upcoming elections.

“The Labour party contacted me and requested if I would like to be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Obi,” the PDP chieftain said.

“And I looked at the political scenario, what Labour party is, and decided that I cannot be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Obi.

“I do not see the path through which Peter Obi will win the election in this country.

“It is so clear that in areas in the South-East, and young people are shouting about him on social media – yes, it’s politics.

“But the truth of the matter is that there are two dominant parties in this country – APC and PDP. If you want to become President, I think you must belong to one of them.”

Peter Obi has emerged as one of the leading candidates for Nigeria’s top political position, with polls from many significant platforms predicting that he will be elected President in 2023.

Obi has received widespread support from Nigerians, particularly young people, on social media and in major cities around the country.
