World Cup

Giroud’s goal propels France past England and into the semifinals.

With a thrilling 2-1 victory against England in the World Cup’s penultimate quarterfinal on Saturday, France remained on path to defend their title thanks to a spectacular Olivier Giroud header 12 minutes from time.

After 17 minutes, Aurelien Tchouameni gave France the lead with a long-range goal, but England’s captain Harry Kane tied the score with a penalty kick in the 54th minute after the French midfielder fouled Bukayo Saka.

Giroud scored the game’s winning goal by heading in an Antoine Griezmann cross, and England’s chances of tying the score again were dashed when Kane missed a second penalty six minutes before the final whistle.

Wednesday’s semifinal matchup pits France against Morocco after the North Africans defeated Portugal 1-0 on Saturday.
