‘If borrowing is a crime, stop driving Mercedes and Lexus.’ Tinubu’s message to Nigerians
Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, has made a statement that has sparked outrage among Nigerian voters.
He encouraged Nigerians to refrain from driving costly cars such as Mercedes Benz and Lexus if they consider borrowing to be a crime.
The former Governor of Lagos State spoke on the nation’s debt and supported President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration’s choice to continue borrowing on Friday during a presentation of his campaign manifesto in Abuja.
Tinubu said: “I stand before you proudly, noting that those who are afraid of the budget, the thoughts of borrowing. Yes, borrowing. If borrowing is a crime, entire America should be in jail. If borrowing is a crime, stop using Mercedes Benz and Lexus”.
Many Nigerians were perplexed online about the connection between the use of specific brands of vehicles and concerns about massive national debts.
This echoes a statement he made a few days earlier at a ceremony in Kaduna when asked how his administration would deal with climate change if elected.
Tinubu said; “Climate change is a question of how do you prevent a church rat from eating a poisoned Holy Communion.”
