Nigerian Lady whose mother was abandoned after father’s death wins Mastercard scholarship to UK, bags Masters degree
Solace Ojotule, a young Nigerian woman, received her master’s degree in Africa and international development from the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.
Solace Ojutale described how she and her mother struggled to get by after being abandoned by her father’s relatives as a result of his passing.
On LinkedIn, she described how her father passed away when she was just 4 years old, and how the paternal relatives promptly grabbed all of her father’s assets because her mother had not given birth to a male child. She claims that her mother gave birth to five children in all, all of whom are female, including herself.
“The girls were abandoned with their mother after all properties have been seized by paternal relations. Then the real struggle began for us as kids and for our mother who was now both the father and mother. All hopes went down the drain and it looked like there was no future for me. Life ended before it began in the real sense,” she wrote.
Throughout her early school years, her mother battled to pay for their school tuition. She said that after completing her basic education, she was unable to go to high school owing to money and would hawk while her friends were attending classes.
