Nigerian Lady whose mother was abandoned after father’s death wins Mastercard scholarship to UK, overcomes tough struggle
Solace Ojotule, a young Nigerian lady who lost her father and had her mother abandoned by her family, has surmounted her difficult circumstances by winning a Mastercard Scholarship to study in the UK.
According to Solace Ojutule, who shared her experience on Linkedin, her father passed away when she was just 4 years old, and the paternal relatives quickly took all of his assets because her mother had not given birth to a male child.
According to Ojotule’s narration, her mother bared 5 children including herself and all of them are females. “The girls were abandoned with their mother after all properties have been seized by paternal relations. Then the real struggle began for us as kids and for our mother who was now both the father and mother. All hopes went down the drain and it looked like there was no future for me. Life ended before it began in the real sense,” she wrote.
Throughout her early school years, her mother battled to pay for their school tuition. She said that after completing her basic education, she was unable to go to high school owing to money and would hawk while her friends were attending classes.
Ojotule claimed that she was fortunate that her state’s government offered free junior high school education. She enrolled in high school and completed her education.
She continued her education at the Kogi State University in North-Central, Nigeria, where she studied theater arts. She narrated that she would return from campus to hawk throughout her time there in order to raise money for the subsequent tuition fee.
Solace Ojotule applied for scholarships after earning a bachelor’s degree in theater arts, and after receiving numerous rejections, the Mastercard Scholarship awarded her a scholarship to study at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.
