Court sentences Tope Peter Obi to prison.
On Tuesday, Justice O.A. Okunuga convicted him on a one-count allegation of possession of fake documents, a violation of Section 318 of the Lagos State Criminal Law 2011.
In a statement issued on November 22, 2022, the EFCC stated that the convict was arraigned by its Lagos Zonal Command.
The count reads; “That you, Tope Peter Obi, sometime on the 8th day of July, 2022 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, had in your possession documents wherein you fraudulently represented yourself as Chris Lane, an American to one Hewitt, a representation of which from the circumstance of this case you knew or reasonably ought to know to be false.”
Tope Peter Obi pleaded guilty to the charge.
G.C. Akaogu, the prosecuting attorney, informed the court that intelligence reports linked the defendant to the crime, prompting his detention and additional investigation.
Following the defendant’s guilty plea and the evidence presented in court, the trial Judge declared him guilty as charged.
Bisola Oshundunmade, the defense counsel, begged the court to temper justice with pity.
However, Justice Okunuga sentenced the defendant to one year in prison with the possibility of a N500,000 fine (Five Hundred Thousand Naira)
The court also ordered Tope to sign an undertaking with the EFCC that he will be of good behavior and never engage in any form of domestic or international economic and financial crime.
