After working as a waitress for 12 years, young woman finally becomes a pilot
After serving as a flight waitress for 12 years, Precious Sibalo, a 35-year-old Zimbabwean, is now officially a licensed pilot.
Since taking part in a field trip at an airport, Precious had always dreamed of becoming a pilot. According to her, she noticed there were no female pilots at that time and that pushed her even more to pursue a male-dominated vocation.
“… I saw male pilots and never saw a woman there. I said to myself ‘I want to be one of those few women who are pilots,” she said.
Her aspirations to become a pilot, however, faced several obstacles once she was given to her grandmother to raise. Because her mother, who gave birth to her at the young age of 17, was unable to provide her requirements, she abandoned her and went to South Africa to hunt for employment.
Precious related how her mother was a maid in South Africa and passed away at the age of about 17 due to illness. Precious continued by saying that, at the same time as her mother passed away, she also became a mother at the age of 17, exactly like her mother.
Precious battled to avoid having her future broken while dealing with the loss of her mother and having to take care of a child.
“…by that time I thought my dreams were shattered because I could no longer go to Advanced Level, I could no longer go to university. So, I had to leave my child in Zimbabwe with my grandparents and go to South Africa as well,” she narrated.
Before traveling to Dubai, where she also worked as a waitress, Precious relocated to South Africa to work as a server and a part-time model. After just 3 months in Dubai, she took an opportunity to work with Qatar Airways as a cabin crew member.
