London’s SOAS University: Sanusi Bags Honorary Degree

Do you know that at the SOAS’s 2019 Graduation ceremonies, Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, received an honorary doctorate in finance? Absolutely true.

The veteran was among the trailblazing individuals from the professions of law, literature, journalism, and finance honored at the elite university’s graduation ceremonies this year.

Sanusi received recognition for his anti-corruption activities in the financial sector as well as for pioneering the introduction of Islamic banking into the Nigerian banking sector.

The board of trustees (BoT) of the university said in its citation that the emir has constantly applied his wealth of knowledge to addressing important development concerns, such as public health, girl child education, revisions of Muslim family law, and the zakat and auqaf systems (endowments).

The director of SOAS, who went by the name Baroness Valerie Amos, spoke on this historic occasion and stated;

This year’s honorees are all outstanding individuals who sought to improve the world by being trailblazers and innovators.

“Their efforts have improved public knowledge of humanitarian issues and conflict, shown how to combat high-level corruption in frequently complicated situations, paved the path for more diversity in publishing, and battled for and won respect for Indonesian women’s rights.

Their accomplishments are a reflection of the ideals we hold dear at SOAS, and I am honored to welcome them to our community.

Sanusi addressed the university’s graduates as she accepted the honor that they are the future and that they have the power to bring about change.

Sanusi said in his words;

“The future is in your hands, and you are the future. Take action, make a difference, and stop waiting for us to solve your problems because, regrettably, we have failed. The possibility of change is wonderful news.

Just after being given his award by the university, he was given a standing ovation.
