Uneducated 71-year-old man obeys mother’s advice to pursue education, bag Master’s degree in flying colours
A 71-year-old South Carolina resident who earned a master’s degree in teaching from the University of South Carolina, USA, has accomplished an amazing feat.
Leroy Harley, a 71-year-old councilman for the town of Bowman, decided to pursue an academic degree on the recommendation of his mother, who believed that despite his advanced age, he would make a fantastic teacher.
Leroy Harley made the decision to join at the age of 69 in order to follow his mother’s advise. At the age of 71, he received a Master’s degree in Teaching three years after beginning his studies.
With his success, he was able to follow his mother’s advice and pursue his passion for teaching. Harley expressed his pride in himself when talking about his accomplishments. After receiving his certificate on Saturday, May 14, 2022, Harley said, “I am pretty proud of myself; I mean, I have to be.”
Harley had previously attended Bethune-Bowman Elementary School, where he had been hired as a teacher’s assistant, before enrolling for a master’s degree at the University of South Carolina.
His admission to University of South Carolina was made easier by the experience he had amassed over the years and the knowledge he had learned while working at Bethune-Bowman Elementary School.
Leroy Harley was pleased with himself and gave credit to his family’s encouragement and hard work for helping him succeed in school.
“I thought, ‘Why am I going back to school at this age? I should be sailing towards retirement. But I went ahead and did it anyway,” he said.
