After a 2-hour outage, Meta restores Whatsapp.
WhatsApp experienced a major outage today, affecting the messaging app for two hours.
WhatsApp web also displayed the error “make sure your computer has an active internet connection.” The problems affected users worldwide and were resolved around 5 a.m. ET.
The service began experiencing problems around 3 a.m. ET, with users being greeted with a “connecting” message.
This was the first major outage for WhatsApp since it went down last year as part of a massive outage that also affected Instagram, Messenger, Oculus, and Facebook.
“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible,” said Meta spokesperson Joshua Breckman in an initial statement to The Verge.
It took nearly six hours for the outage to be resolved and WhatsApp to be restored. Meta, then known as Facebook, stated that the major outage was caused by a router configuration change.
WhatsApp outages are still uncommon, but they have far-reaching consequences for communications worldwide, as the service is used by more than two billion people each month.
When WhatsApp went down last year, so did the jobs of Brazilians.
