Colette Offiong Bassey, a remarkable Nigerian woman, became the first-ever first-class graduate of the Department of Linguistics and Communications Studies at the University of Calabar, Nigeria, breaking a 44-year-old record.

Colette, who was severely pregnant at the time of her final year exam, described how she took the test on a Wednesday and gave birth to a boy the following Saturday.

A statement by the university confirmed that she is the first person in the history of the institution to earn a first-class degree from the Linguistics and Communications studies department. The statement reads: “Bassey Colette Offiong emerged as the only first-class student from Linguistics and Nigerian Languages in the 2018/2019 session”

“and the first ever in the history of the department dated back to 1977,” it added.

Colette thanked her husband and God for their encouragement and support as she celebrated her accomplishment.

“To God be the glory. I remember finishing exams on a certain Wednesday and giving birth that Saturday. It was one hell of a ride but it ended in praise,” she wrote on Instagram.
