Brilliant Nigerian Lady wins 7 PhD scholarships in US universities without a Bachelor’s degree, lands in Florida

Without a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, a talented Nigerian woman named Islamiyat Ojelade has been awarded 7 PhD Scholarships at 7 of the best universities in the United States.

A Higher National Diploma (HND) credential allowed Islamiyat, who shared her accomplishment on LinkedIn, to get entrance and scholarships to the universities’ PhD programs. After finishing a 4-year academic program at a polytechnic, students in Nigeria can apply for the HND credential.

Islamiyat received her diploma from the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun State, in the South-West of Nigeria, with an HND in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT). With a cumulative grade point of 3.89, she earned an excellent diploma from the school, making her the finest graduate of the class of 2018.

Islamiyat fought against the discrimination of HND certificate holders in Nigeria. She explained that after her undergraduate studies, she was confused about the next steps to take. “I was scared and confused on what next to do after my undergraduate studies. I summoned the courage to discuss my ‘big dream’ with some people including friends, fathers, mothers, and lecturers,” she wrote on LinkedIn.

In the end, she received PhD Scholarship offers from Florida State University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, the University of North Texas, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Marquette University in Wisconsin despite the fact that very few people had expressed an interest in helping her.
