78-year-old woman fulfils dream, graduates from US university with Bachelor’s degree, set to enrol for Masters
Vivian Cunningham, a remarkable 78-year-old woman who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, has realized a lifelong desire.
Vivian Cunningham, a great-grandmother now, took six years to complete her education. She majored in liberal studies and had the honor of receiving her bachelor’s degree in front of her entire family by crossing the stage.
“I say follow your dreams, don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done, keep pushing and keep God in the plan. “If I could have done cartwheels across the stage, I would have,” Cunningham told Today.
She had spent 29 years working for the Alabama Power Company, first as a custodian and then as the head of the mailroom. She eventually left the business in 1992 and went on to acquire her associate’s degree in paralegal studies from Virginia College in the United States, according to Today.
Aside from learning to sew from her grandmother and great-grandmother, Vivian Cunningham also learned the craft at school and worked as a seamstress for family and friends before landing a job at the Alabama Power Company.
Vivian Cunningham had a lot of free time after retiring, and she is still passionate about learning. She then enrolled at Samford University to pursue a different degree. She already had two children, three granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren at the time of enrolment.
“AARP (the American Association of Retired Persons) tells us to take some classes and do something instead of just sitting down and being retired, so I kept going. I enjoyed being in the classroom,” she explained to the outlet.
