Despite the fact that I make a lot of club records, I feel like a pastor- Wizkid
Wizkid, a multi-award-winning Nigerian musician, has stated that his lyrics do not accurately reflect his true feelings as a spiritual being.
Many people know The Starboy as someone who releases a lot of club bangers, but what they don’t know is that he sees himself as a pastor.
Wizkid said this in an interview with The Guardian, recalling how he discovered his love of music in church.
Being the youngest of 11 children raised by a Christian mother and a polygamous Muslim father with three wives, the ‘Bad To Me’ singer claims that hymns taught him “how to feel.”
“I’m a very spiritual human being. I know I make a lot of club records but I feel like a pastor, really,” he said.
He also discussed how music helped him grow up in a female-dominated household and in a society where the only other option was a life of crime.
“Music was more than a hobby for me, more than a talent. It was my escape. I was in the hood. It was either [music] or turn to crime. That’s why I don’t joke with music,” Wizkid said.
The Grammy winner went on to say that he grew up in Surulere, Lagos state, in a “chaotic but fun” environment.
Machala stated that his parents’ desires for him were to be a lawyer or a doctor, so telling them that he wanted to do music was difficult.
He went on to describe how, while trying to make a name for himself as a rapper, he was taken under the wing of late producer OJB Jezreel.
Wiz explained; “My parents wanted me to be a lawyer or a doctor. That was a very hard conversation to have when I said I wanted to make music. I had to just prove [myself] to them.”
