Brilliant African Lady bags Masters degree with China scholarship, becomes first-ever woman to win the award
Melissa Kariuki, a talented young woman from Kenya, won the Schwarzman Scholarship after successfully finishing her Master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, being the first woman from Kenya to do so.
Melissa Kariuki, who announced her success on Linkedin, said she is honored to be able to represent her nation and appear in settings where black, African women are underrepresented.
She began her higher education career at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, where she received a Bachelor of Business Science, Accounting, and Finance degree. She also studied business management and entrepreneurship at The African Leadership University.
The following year, she was awarded the renowned China Schwarzman Scholarship, which is available to international students who wish to pursue a master’s degree in China. This scholarship aims to create a global community of future leaders who will act as global leaders. It offers a one-year, fully-funded master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

After receiving the scholarship, Melissa Kariuki traveled to Beijing, China’s Tsinghua University to pursue a master’s degree in management science.
“On the 26th of June, I graduated with a Master of Management Science from Tsinghua University – Asia’s #1. I completed it in exactly 10 months as a Patrice Motsepe Fellow on a full scholarship as part of the Schwarzman Scholars program- a program that aims to deepen the understanding between China & the rest of the world,” she wrote on Linkedin.
