Young African lady receives PhD at age 25, setting a remarkable record

Nomhle Ngwenya, a brilliant young South African woman, has broken an academic record by becoming the youngest person ever to receive a PhD from Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Nomhle graduated with a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science at the age of 25, making her the institution’s youngest ever recipient of such an honor. Between 2015 and 2022, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and Sociology and her Master’s Degree in Geography and Environmental Sciences from Wits University in South Africa.

Nomhle expressed her gratitude and excitement on Twitter, saying she was “truly humbled” to be Wits University’s youngest PhD graduate. She also mentioned how her PhD journey taught her resilience, passion, and the value of determination in achieving one’s goals.

Her PhD project, under the supervision of Prof Simatele, focused on innovative financial mechanisms in the bond market and their potential role in financing South Africa’s low-carbon transition.
