Young Lady bags PhD in Nuclear Engineering, sets record as the first-ever black person to achieve it in US university

A remarkable 27-year-old American woman named Charlyne Smith has made history at the University of Florida by becoming the school’s first-ever black graduate with a PhD in nuclear engineering.

According to Charlyne Smith, who is currently a Senior Nuclear Energy Analyst on the Breakthrough Institute’s Nuclear Energy Innovation team, her accomplishment will open doors for underrepresented groups.

“It means more options, more open doors for marginalized groups, including Black women and men, to create and innovate in the nuclear energy space to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, including climate change,” Smith said.

North American St. Catherine, Jamaica, is where Charlyne Smith was born. In order to pursue a career in science and technology, she relocated to the United States in 2012.

After arriving in the country, Charlyne Smith continued her education at Coppin State University in Baltimore, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics in 2017.
